What is an External Hard Disk Drive?

In layman’s terms an external hardrive is basically an electronic data storage device which can be read and written to magenetically by  read/write heads built within it.Historically they were built for main frames  but in the 80′s they became available for personal computers but were very big and expensive and only as add-on systems.

Today external hard disk drives are readily available and they connect to the computer or laptop using a USB cable or  firewire.They can be used for the following;

• You can use them as a back up for your information and files.

• Data Recovery.

• Disk Cloning

• Running Virtual Machines

• Video Editing and Recording

For most people and the average user ,usage is generally limited to storage of music ,photo and video  file storage.External disk drives are available as portable mainly for laptops meaning they get their power from the laptop or they come as Standard desktop external drives and they get their power from the mains.These are some of the issues you have to take into consideration before your purchase.

There are hundreds of manufacturers of external hard drives however most of them are made by Western Digital,Seagate,Hitachi,Toshiba and Samsung.You may want to purchase your disk drive by brand ,which is ok but you need to know the problems that come with particular disk drives and this you are going to learn here.

Please remember that in a lot of cases external drives have problems with the  Windows  Operating System,l especially Windows XP SP2 and also because portable drives are moved around a lot they tend to become loose inside and that can cause the hard rive inside to incorrectly read data or not work at all.
