    Making a Hard Drive Speaker

    By admin | December 31, 2009

I thought hard disk speakers looked cool so I’ve made one. the hdd which I’ve used is an old Seagate (631mb capacity – yeah.. Really old.) Don’t do this with new/good hdd’s because once you open that drive’s case, you can’t expect to use it as a storage drive anymore. “hard disk speakers” are nothing more than eye candy. they sound pretty crap and you need an amplifier to work it. they’re quite easy to make though.. – if you have a dead hdd lying around, might as well play around with it =D…

I unscrewed every screw that was on the hdd
and connected it with a new car battery
and left it in my room
with lots of cotton on the floor

very basic soldering skills are required, and only the actuator arm’s wires are needed because the arm is the only thing moving in this hdd speaker. a bit of extra work is needed to make the disk spin. searching for something like “spinning hdd speaker” would get you some good videos about them.

good job… but im just interested i know that the motor spinning the disk is quite fast… is it easy to connect? do i need control circuits or whatever?

it wasnt actually very loud. im guessing its because my room was dead quiet, maybe.

      Question though.
When you test the connections with the motherboard speaker how did you get it to play so loud? i have to turn my volume way up on my hi-fi set till like 57% before i can get that volume level.

are you using an amp? if you are, it might not be strong enough.

Hello. Thank’s a lot for your video. I’ll try to make one next week.
What’s software did you use on your laptop to play sound?

the amp i used to power the drive had a 3.5mm aux input, which went into the headphone jack of the laptop.
